Baptism by the Bay, Cool in the Furnace, Homegoing for Lula Belle Hardin, Counselor Opportunity for San Diego CityFest
August 26, 2010One of the really fun and meaningful events of the summer is our annual Baptism at the Bay. Here, people in the most public way, proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord of their life. Two thousand years ago, Jesus walked about sixty miles from Nazareth to be baptized in the murky water of the Jordan River. We get to drive 30 miles to be baptized in the beautiful setting of San Diego Bay! Many people have made decisions for Christ this summer, and others will be identifying with Gateway Church through this public event. Come and celebrate with us. Here is a list of activities for that afternoon:
Afternoon Recreation, 4:00pm
Food & Fellowship, 5:00pm
Baptism Service, 6:00pm
The Lord’s Supper Service, 6:30pm
Visit our website for more information and directions:

This coming Sunday, Kid’s Rock, our children’s choir ministry, will be leading us in the music portion of our service, sharing from the musical, Cool in the Furnace.
http://www.gatewaychurchonline.com/eventcalendar/1533/ I’ll wrap up the morning with a message of how God is with us all the way through our times of trial.
LulaBelle Hardin, mother of Linda Lilyquist, and friend to many at Gateway Church, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 23rd. You are invited to join the Hardin & Lilyquist families at the following events. May we gather to comfort one another and recall fond remembrances of LulaBelle.

What is a Counselor?
Counselors are everyday people who want to experience something extraordinary ... to take hold of one of the greatest privileges a Christian can have. They want to help guide another person through the life-changing decision to personally receive Jesus Christ at CityFest.
1) Watch the Video (If you’ve been to a live orientation event or already watched the online videos, go to step 3.)
2) Download a Counselor Orientation guide to use while watching the video.
3) Register as a counselor by Tuesday, August 31 in order to participate.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13
I hope to see you at Gateway!

( 3 / 5 )Hello Gateway Family and Friends,
Here We Grow Again!
The smell of dry wall is in the air as construction has begun on the ceilings of our children's classrooms. There is almost nothing I would rather see than progress, and it is happening!
I also feel the same way about our church. The spiritual roots are deepening, and our desire to serve the community more evident than ever. On Saturday, 40 plus people from Gateway will be spending their morning with 500 others, not in their own yard, but in school yards around Santee as we serve the children, not just at Gateway Church, but in all the local public schools. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tryNxWIEt1U
There is something good about doing a noble act for others. There is something also important about being model citizens. Sunday, I will be using these analogies, stories and testimonies to suggest the Christian life is just like being a farmer, an athlete or a soldier. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?se ... ersion=NIV
Come and hear how! I will be looking for you!
In Christ,
Pastor Mark

( 3 / 5 )God is getting ready to do something big in San Diego County, and He is preparing for it by the prayers of His people. People crying out to God for help have preceded the great moves done by Him throughout history. One such man I read about today was Nehemiah, and here is his account in chapter one http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?se ... ersion=NIV
There was prayer, there was planning, and there was prayer again. Nehemiah pours out his broken heart before the Lord; in essence, he was saying, “O God, what a mess we are in because we have sinned, and we deserved every bit of the pain that we experienced, but now, O God, forgive us and restore our relationship with You.” The next prayer time Nehemiah had was after he received permission to go to Jerusalem and investigate their dire situation. The gates had been burned and the walls were in ruins. At night, Nehemiah took his horse and rode around the city praying and planning to be a part of the solution.
This is exactly what we are doing 2500 years later in San Diego County. We are pleading with God and praying for Him to do a mighty work in our city, to bring glory to His name and be used by His Holy Spirit to reach others for the cause of Christ. You have an opportunity to be involved in a unique time of intercession. People will be gathering for the next 30 days to walk along the CityFest Site while praying for God to touch the hearts of all who attend the CityFest on September 11, 2010.
I encourage you to gather with your friends, family, small group or a prayer partner so that like Nehemiah we make ourselves ready for God to do something extraordinary in our day. God bless us as we seek His face together! San Diego City Fest http://www.sandiegocityfest.com
In Christ,
Pastor Mark

( 3 / 25 )I have in my hand a 1974 Patrick Henry High School class ring that belongs to me. I am holding it because I am not the same size I was in high school, and because it reminds me of a great story, in fact, two great stories. See, this ring that my parents bought for me over 36 years ago is mine; I chose the style and had my named engraved on the inside. It was purchased and paid for, and I became its owner. Yet one day at Balboa Park, not wanting my hand to get cut when making a catch, I took off my ring to play flag football. When I went to retrieve it, the ring was gone and, as far as I knew, forever, until, one fateful day when I received a call from a San Diego pawnshop. They had a Patrick Henry High School class ring with my name engraved in it and wanted to know if I would like to buy it back. I went downtown, re-purchased the ring that had been mine, and owned it once again.
Jesus does the same thing for us. He made us, created us and formed us in our mother’s womb, and yet through sin and its penalty, we were lost. Jesus, with His own blood, purchased us back again and redeemed us. Now as I said in the beginning, this ring holds two stories, not just one.
About a month ago I looked for my class ring because several people in our church were giving their jewelry as a donation for our “Lids 4 Kids” offering. And then, out of the blue, I received a phone call from the person I sold my house to fourteen years ago in Yucaipa. While digging in the backyard, he had come across a class ring with my name engraved in it. Three days later, he mailed my 1974 high school class ring back to me. My ring was once lost, but now it’s found. It was mine once, twice, and now three times. This Sunday, I will be preaching about how we can have peace with God, how the lost can be found, and how we can be redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ. I hope to see you there as we celebrate in song and sermon with the Lords’ Supper, and I might even show you my class ring!
In Christ,
Pastor Mark

For those of us at Gateway and East County, we are holding a prayer meeting THIS EVENING at Gateway Church, 7pm to help intercede for this special time when we all are choosing to work together as Christians to make our communities the best that they can be and impact the lives of others by sharing the love of Jesus. Now of course people can pray alone and in their own home, but in the New Testament, there were also times of intense prayer together. One of them was when Peter was imprisoned, God moved in a mighty way and allowed him the miracle of walking out of a jail unharmed and undetected to meet Rhoda at the door. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?se ... ersion=NIV
So tonight, Janet and I will be at the church praying with Pastor Thomas Bush, fellow pastors, and leaders, asking the Lord to have a special blessing on our community, Summer 2010 and beyond. We invite you to be there with us tonight, 7pm at the church!
On Sunday, Pastor Sam will wrap up his summer series, GATEWAY AT THE MOVIES http://www.gatewaychurchonline.com/stories/movies with a message on redemption and responsibility, and you will not want to miss that!
In Christ,
Pastor Mark
